People Who Died

I’m feeling very strange today. It all started when I decided the name “Phil” was the funniest word in the English language. Then I had to hear the Jim Carroll class song People Who Died.

Oh and stay far far away from the Dumb Ass Truckers Drive By Truckers version. These guys suck in so many ways.

Don’t ask me…

Rick Springfield

I’m going through iTunes Music store listening to each song on The Best of Rick Springfield trying to decide if I want to buy it. If I find a certain number of songs I like I’ll buy the whole album. Doesn’t have to be 10 songs, which is the point the 9.99 price is less than buying all the songs.

Jessie’s Girl I already have.

I’ve Done Everything for You has a good hook, but I’m just not as into the anger at women thing as when I was a teenager.

Love is Alright Tonight. No real feelings about it.

Don’t Talk to Strangers. Reminds me a of Robbie Dupree(?) song I listened to way too much back then. No thanks.

What Kind of Fool Am I? Never heard of it before.

You know at this point I’m thinking I must of remembered Rick as better than he was.

I Get Excited. Actually like the beginning. Like the lyrics too. I may get this one. “I’d buy that for a dollar”.

Reconfigured my iTunes prefs to use a shopping cart instead of a one click to buy. There are 4 Liz Phair songs in there already from when I used to have it this way.

Affair of the Heart OK.

Human Touch I knew this was one I’d probably buy before I started listening. Maybe it had to do with the Sci Fi video as youth, but I like it.

Souls I kind of remember this one, but didn’t think of it as that title.

Love Somebody Kind of remember this on too.

Don’t Walk Away Snore.

Bop ‘Til You Drop OK I’m back to wondering.

Taxi Dancing Some kind of duet. It sucks.

Celebrate Youth Mmmm. Doesn’t suck, but ain’t that good either.

State of the Heart This, like the last one, was from a later more “mature” album.

Rock of Life More maturity.

OK so I listened to the whole album and there are two songs in my shopping cart. I think I’ll go ahead and get the 4 Liz Phair’s too even though I’ve stolen them already because she needs the money. Here’s the list Insanity (an exclusive), Why Can’t I, Hot White Cum, Extraordinary.

This is why Apple is brilliant and iTunes Music Store is easy. I went from spending maybe a dollar to $5.49 plus tax.

The new copy URL feature is really cool too.

More Blogging VH1

Ran down stairs and grabbed my back pack and other battery. But alas the battery was dead. So I ended up wired.

Hooters. Some bald guy. Reminds me of Lex Luthor. All you Zombies?

No Julie Brown on iTunes.

Oh I remember this song now. It’s about Moses. Remember thinking that was so cool when I was a teen.

No Trapped in the Body of a White Girl on Gnutella. There is one Julie Brown song, Because I’m a Blonde.

Since I’ve got Acquisition going I hit my Krista Allen search.

Hooters song ends with some Commie looking guy hanging upside down.

J. Geils Band. “Come Back”. I went to the J. Geils Band concert when I was a teen. Only went to 2 concerts as a teen. Jethro Tull was the other one. This video is lame. Centerfold is their best song any way. Watching some white guy dance 4 steps over and over is lame.

Don’t you Forget about Me. Promo. Got to get that song if I don’t have.

Teach for Fears. Girl is a red one piece bathing suit in a pool. With and alligator. Mmmm.

My God there’s a Julie Brown Wiki.. Still no lyrics.

Kate Bush hounds of love. Quality of videos is going up. Don’t know about the quality of the music.

R.E.M with pictures of homeless people. Think I’ve had enough VH1.

Well I hope you’ve enjoyed my venture into live blogging of VH1.

MODE: Live

All Night Long by Lionel Richie. Sure did love those bright colors back in the 80’s. And break dancing was still around.

So I decided I wanted to watch some music videos. Appreantly though I have 4 video channels, there are no actual vidoes. OK I found Pop Show on VH1.

Peter Wolf, Lights Out. It’s amazing how low the quality of these old videos are. Heck I could practically shoot and edit this stuff myself.

Oh the hair. How big can it get.

First video I saw was the Captain and Tennille and really wasn’t a music video. Though Tennille looked pretty good with big blonde hair and bright lip gloss. Top was open to her waist with her bra showing. Pretty risky.

Starship, Build This City on Rock and Roll. A good song. kind of weird video. The director seemed to have discovered the super impose ability of his editing machine and used it for everything. Wow Lincoln is in this one. Even sings a little.

Kept watching because there was a Rick Springfield video and at lunch I heard and sung along with Jessie’s Girl, which I said I’d buy if it was on iTunes. Could connect after lunch. Let’s try again.

Its there.

Tracey Ullman. Isn’t she a comedian? 50 styles. Actually 70s retro to the 50s. She’s actually kind of pretty. Bowling ball between her legs. Home movies. Wonder if they are really her.

Now at the end of the video, she’s all frumpy and …wait Paul McCartney. Wow. They Don’t know about us. was the name of the song.

Playing the White Album backwards on a promo.

OK looks like Pop Show is over. Now its the eighties show.

Ohh Prince, Let’s Go Crazy. Love this song. He’s such a freak, but great music. This is from Purple Rain the movie.

Oh No Let’s Go…Let’s Go Crazy. Dr Everything gonna be all right. Please Cumm…

I’m now the proud owner of Jessie’s Girl

Julie Brown. Short skirts. high heels. Song kind of sucks. “Trapped in the body of a white girl” Oh god this is too much. “Show me your’s I’ll show you mine.” Sort of a Weird Science kind of theme. Got to find these lyrics. Trapped in the Body of a White Girl.

Some lame 50’s song is on now.

The kittens doing Crimson and Clover. Is this a video or a promo? Promo.

Clouds…LA. Ah U2. Where the Streets Have No Name. Cops are shutting them down by the man. No they won’t be shut down. Bono is a rebel. Steady-cams for everyone. Good song though.

Well I’m running out of battery so I’d better post. Still haven’t found the lyrics to Trapped in the Body of a White Girl. Sorry.

Does Christian Rock suck?

Was reading the Accordion Guy’s blog and came across this entry. I read the linked off story and started to comment. But my comment got too long, so now it is a post.

This isn’t anything new. People have been saying that much of “Contemporary” Christian music isn’t good.

I see a couple of a couple of problems.

First most commercial music isn’t good. We like to think all music is like the best. But even some of the most popular is regularly bashed. Britney Spears and NSYNC sell millions of albums. But millions of people say it is crap. So this author doesn’t like Christian rock. Big deal. Has he listened to all of it? Doubtful, he is basically saying if it’s about Christianity then it sucks. As with all art, personal preference dictates what we like.

The second criticism is that Christian Rock isn’t deep. It doesn’t deal the the pain of the real world. I read an article on CCM over 10 years ago by Billy Sprague saying the same thing. And the fact is a lot of Christian Rock isn’t about pain and suffering. But some is. (Sorry can’t pull any off the to of my head, but I haven’t listen to Christian Music in a while.)

Does all music have to be about pain? No. Just like all music, there are different reasons for the song. Some music is about celebration. In Christian music some is pure praise. The point is to talk about why God is good. Its fine to struggle with God and the world. With pain and suffering, but not all the time. If you focus only on the bad you aren’t getting a balanced perspective. Sometime you need to look at the good. That’s kind of the point in Christianity. God is good, wether we feel like he is or think he is.

I have a friend who didn’t know how he felt about God. We used to have discussions about it. In one of these he asked why we worshiped. If you worshiped a person we would say that was bad. But God wants us to worship him. Why? It caused me some thought. But I finally came to this conclusion. We can worship God because he is Good. You can’t worship a person because “Nobody is perfect”, but God is, so it is OK.

This is a getting a little off topic. Its OK to sing about God’s goodness because that is what we want for the world, and what He wants, which is why He tells us to do it.

So, going back to Christian Rock not dealing with suffering. It doesn’t have to all the time to be “good”. It can be about happy stuff. The same is true for all music. Loves songs don’t all have to be about pain, even if they are country.

I guess it pissed me off a little that this guy was casting such a wide swath with his condemnation of Christian Rock. Yeah some, even a lot sucks, but don’t condemn it all. Keep looking, like you would for any music, and you’ll find some you like.
