spam.la

DreamHost is my host and I really like them. I’ve been with them for years now and have never had a problem. They also keep adding new stuff, so things just get better.

They put out a monthly newsletter, which is often humorous, and this month they announced two cool things. First they are offering WebDav. Which is good for me because I’ve been banging my head trying to get the scripting of uploading of images to work correctly. It used to work using curl from the command line, but when the office upgraded their provider, curl stopped working because it can’t find its own IP address. Go figure. I also tried to use Fetch via AppleScript but that didn’t work either. Now I can try mounting the picture folder via WebDav and just doing a standard Finder copy.

The other thing they announced was Spam.la. You can use it for throw away email addresses. Any email sent to any spam.la address is just displayed on the main webpage. This lets you put “[email protected]” when someone asks for an email address. Then even if you need to confirm the email address, you go to spam.la and do the confirmation. Also interesting to read. I’m not sure it will work in the long run because spammers will start hammering it with guess email addresses and that will add lots of noise. But since they only keep 450 emails it might not be too big a deal.
